Having been in makeup brush industry for so many years, more than 90% of our customers would like to engrave their own company name or logo on the brushes they ordered. They hope to promote their brands through this way.

However, some customers hang back due to the logo fee. They believe the fee to have their logo printed on the brushes must be very expensive and maybe some kind of unaffordable for them. It is really a misunderstanding. Usually, most customers would like to use silk printing for their logos. Here we would like to introduce some information on logo fee of silk printing.

The logo fee of silk printing includes plate fee and printing fee. Plate fee is one-off fee, that means customers do not need to pay the plate fee for each order, and if the logo size of the whole set is the same, they only need to pay one plate fee. 1 plate fee is less than USD100.0. Although customers need to pay printing fee for each brush, the printing fee is very cheap, less than RMB1.0 for each brush.

Therefore, if customers want to check samples first and print logo on the samples, the whole sample fee may raise a lot, especially once they want to see different samples with different handle and logo sizes. The logo fee may the main part of the sample fee. However, if customers confirm the samples and would like to order large quantity, they will no need to pay the plate fee again, as above mentioned, plate fee is one-off fee.

To save cost, some customers prefer no logo for samples. Once they confirm the sample quality and place large orders with their logo, we may waiver the logo fee including plate fee and printing fee. Of course, at this situation, customers have not seen the logo effect, so before mass production, we will firstly send pictures or samples of the brushes with logo for customers’ confirmation, and ensure the logo style and printing can meet customers’ requirements.

A good camera is important during custom makeup brushes

A good camera is very important to both makeup brush manufacturers and customers.

 

For makeup brush manufacturers:

 

Firstly, we need to put some pictures of makeup brushes on our website to show our production ability and quality. If the camera is not so good, we will not be able to show the real status of the brushes, and then customers can not get enough information from the pictures.

 

Secondly, unclear and ugly pictures will not attract any customer; no customer will order the makeup brushes they do not like. Some may say that we can use Photoshop to modify and beautify the pictures to reach a perfect affect. But it always depends on the original photo quality. No matter how perfect you PS skill are, you need a good original photo.

 

Thirdly, during custom makeup brushes, we need send samples to customers for confirmation before mass production. But to save shipping cost and time, some customers want to confirm the samples by photos. If the camera is not good, customers may not like the brushes in the pictures even if the real brushes is perfect and qualified, which will confuse customers and will delay the production, also will increase the production cost of makeup brush manufactures.

 

For customers:

 

Firstly, before ordering the makeup brushes, customers will need to show the makeup brush factory what kind of brushes they want. The best way is to send real samples to the makeup brush factory, but it will waste time and money, also some customers may need brushes which combine several brushes, if they buy all these brushes and then send to factory, it will need a lot of money; it is really not cost effective for customers to pay so much without finalizing everything. So the most cost effective way is to take photo for all brushes they need, specify their detailed requirements, and require the makeup brush factory to roughly quote according to the photos. If the price and all other condition are ok for both, they can consider the next step such as sending real samples to the brush factory.

 

Secondly, after getting the brushes which are unqualified, customers can take photos of the unqualified brushes to show the factory how these brushes are unqualified. Such photos should clearly show the details of the defects, otherwise, the brush factory will not accept one-sided statements of customers.

Plastic handle of makeup brushes

It is known that wooden handle and plastic handle are the most common handle material for makeup brushes. Most users will prefer wooden handle for their daily usage, while due to its limit on the shape, wooden handle are not always the preference for all customers. Some customers want to custom makeup brushes with their own style; they aim to show a unique makeup brush to the users, so they cudgel their brains on the brush shape.

Plastics, thanks for their property, can be molded to various shapes to meet customers’ requirements on the handle shape. Most plastic handle shape will be achieved by injection molding, while the molding fee is very expensive, so if the order quantity is not so huge, plastic handle may not be a wise choice.

If customers would like to have plastic handles, they should send their design/drawing to the makeup brush manufacturers. Not like wooden handle which just needs the diameter and length, plastic handle needs detailed size of each part, so that the makeup brush manufacturers can check and evaluate the molding fee and other cost. Therefore, a detailed drawing is essential, 3D drawing will be the best, if no 3D drawing, 2D drawing with detailed size on each part will be also ok.

After calculating the exact cost, the makeup brush factory will quote customers in detail, including the molding fee, the unit price on the makeup brush etc. After paying the molding fee, customers will have the ownership on the mold; they can decide to leave the mold on the brush factory for future orders or to ship the mold to themselves. The brush factory has no right to handle the mold.

Sample request

Before ordering any brush, some customers will request samples from the makeup brush manufacturers to check the brush quality or to finalize which brushes are exactly the ones they want to order. Therefore, if the customers have not any target or ideas on the needed brushes, they will usually require samples as many as they can. Some even require more than 30 different brush types. However, most of them will be scared away after knowing sample fees from the makeup brush manufacturer. Most of them can not believe they need to pay so much for only several samples. For example, USD100.0 for 2 samples, USD500 for 20 samples etc.

 

The reason is most makeup brush manufacturers will not have brush samples in stock, even if these makeup brushes are listed in their price list. The brushes in the price list are only to show customers they once produce these brushes for some customers but not mean the stock brushes. Usually, the makeup brush factory orders material according to customers’ order quantity to produce the brushes, so even if there will be some remaining or inventory, they are spare parts for future checking.

 

So if customers request samples, the makeup brush manufacturers have to produce new samples, and to produce these samples, they have to order different material for hair/ferrule/handle, do different color painting etc for only few samples, so the cost must be very high.

 

However, some customers who are just entering into the makeup brush industry do not know this situation; they believe it is really daylight robbery to quote USD500 for 20 samples. Although we have explained this situation to every customer, they just do not believe our sincerity. But we get sample request every day, it is impossible to always afford such high cost by ourselves since customers have not any finalized order.

 

Communication ways on different steps

No matter what kind of products, customers and suppliers always need communication to reach agreement and to push the project moving forward. Everybody knows some communication skills more or less; here I would like to say the communication ways on different steps during custom makeup brushes.

 

For the customers who would like to custom makeup brushes with complex and special design, it is better to communicate via email at the beginning. As it is hard to clearly express the design on the phone, also due to the language limit of both sides, it may cause misunderstanding on the phone. While by email, both sides will have enough time to read and understand the meaning. So at the beginning, customers and suppliers should communicate by email.

 

Once both sides reach agreement on the design, the makeup brush manufacturers will need to quote according to the design; both sides need to discuss on the delivery time and payment terms etc. At this step, emails will also be better than phone. As emails are traceable once if any side forget the terms, and emails can also be a proof if any conflict arise. Anyway, if any side would like to move quicker, it is great to set up a call to discuss details. The price, delivery time and payment terms can all be discussed on the phone to push the ball roll quirkier. But all discussion results on the phone should be finalized and confirmed by both sides via email in case of any misunderstanding or conflict.

 

Once the production is finished, manufacturers can call or email customers to arrange the shipment. After the shipment is sent out, it will be great if manufacturers can call or email customers to notify the related information or tracking number. Once customers receive the shipment, a call or email will be essential to notify such receiving.

 

If customers find any quality problem with guarantee period and would like to resolve such problem quickly, call the manufacturers to notify such problem is good, but a written email should also be followed.

 

Now emails have play an important role in international business, for anything urgent, it is ok to set up a call, but everything that needs confirmation or finalization should be via email or written letters.

The hair thickness of makeup brushes

For custom makeup brushes, customers usually send us the brushes they would like to order and require us to exact copy the brushes.

 

It is easy to check if the color is the same as original brushes; if the logo is the same as original; if handle length/thickness, ferrule length/thickness and hair length is the same… all of the above can be judged by visual observations. While some can not, for example, customers can not judge if the hair material is the same as original, they have to touch and feel the hairs to check the softness etc. However, few customers can recognize the exact hair material just through feeling and touching.

 

Hairs are the most difficult during customers’ inspection, besides the hair material, hair thickness is also very difficult to evaluate. Some customers believe that they can judge the hair thickness by holding the hairs. But as professional makeup brush manufacturer, we know that judgment on hair thickness is more difficult than hair material.

 

Firstly, most customers just evaluate the thickness by hands/eyes which can not show the exact hair thickness unless the difference is very obvious. The makeup brush factory usually inspects the hair thickness by the diameter of the ferrule that connects the hairs, but some brushes are fluffy while some are dense. In this case, if customers judge by shape, the brushes are the same, but if judge by holding the brushes, they will feel the obvious difference.

 

Secondly, the hair material will also affect the hair thickness. Some customers send us their existing brushes to us but they do not like their hair material, so they require us to change to a better hair material without any size change. We make samples exactly according to their size (same ferrule diameter, same density), but they insist that our samples are not as thick as their original brushes. In fact, that is because our hair material is much better and softer than their brushes, so even if with the same hair amount, our brushes may not feel so thick. The experienced customers and manufacturers will know that better hairs are softer and slimmer than worse hairs.

 

We really hope that our customers can judge from different aspects during evaluating our samples, after all, personal feeling is not so accurate, although we will always try our best to meet customers’ every requirement, it is really hard for us to produce makeup brushes just according to customers’ personal feeling.

The goat hair color

It is know that the brush hair can be dyed to various colors to meet customers’ different requirements during custom makeup brushes. Generally, the powder brushes and blush brushes are made of goat hair and usually in black, so some believe that the original color of goat hair is black.

 

It is really a misunderstanding. The original goat hair is white; you can see the hair on goats. And its original color is not pure white but with light yellow. Such color seems not so clean, so some makeup brush manufacturers choose to dye the hair to dark color to cover the light yellow, for example, black, red, brown. However, there are some customers who really like white color, then the goat hair will be bleached to pure white.

 

In fact, even if the natural goat hair is not in pure color, it is very clean once used on makeup brushes. After cutting from the goats, the hair will be sterilized &boiled to kill the virus and bacterial, and then sell to the makeup brush factory to manufacturer the makeup brushes. Therefore, although not so beautiful, it is just as safe as other colors and will not be harm to human skin.

 

That is why some customers prefer natural hair color for their brushes. They believe that without any dyeing, the brushes with natural hair color are much better than those brushes have been dyed to many colors.

 

Anyway, the hair color really depends on customers’ personal preference, for the makeup brush manufacturers, it makes no difference to have natural color or any dyed color.

Label or tag on makeup brushes

For those customers who just enter into makeup brush industry and have no idea on which brushes are good, they usually require samples with various materials to check which brushes are ok for them. But if makeup brush manufacturers just put all kinds of brushes together in boxes without any explanation or illustration, it will be somewhat nonsense to send the samples.

To help customers exactly understand the difference between different materials, we should put a label /tag on each brush to specify its material of each part, just like: ZGF goat hair, copper ferrule, wooden handle. In this way, once customers receiving the samples, they can know the material difference by viewing and touching. They will know that ZGF goat hair is much softer than HJG goat hair, copper ferrule is shinning than aluminum ferrule; and wooden handle is more proper for their application….Then, the following communication will be much easier, if they decide to custom makeup brushes, they will tell the makeup brush manufacturer the exact material they need.

Just one thing during labeling, do not directly affix the label with glue or adhesive tape on brushes, otherwise, after being removed, the labels will leave ugly glue remnants on brushes, which may affect customers’ quality evaluation. So we should pack each brush with an OPP bag, and affix the label on the OPP bag, then customers can easily remove the label without leaving any remnants.

Although the makeup brush manufacturers take some time during labeling, you will finally realize that such time is really worthwhile, and will make your following communication smoother and quicker.

The bronze powder on brush handles

These days, we are making some prototypes for a customer who would like to have brush handles in different color. Since the customer has not finalized the color they prefer, we can not buy paintings with each color which will be a huge cost. Therefore, to show customers the effect of each color, we spray some bronze powders instead on the brush handles and plan to send them to customers for confirmation.

 

While our ideas are obstructed once we send the prototypes. According to our local FedEx, the products with powders are not permitted to ship via air, unless the powders are certificated to be harmless. While the certification cost is too high and once the customer confirm the demand color, we will use painting on the brush handles instead of powder, so it is not worthwhile to do such certificate for so few prototypes. After communicating with customer on such situation, we have to give up such ideas and try to find out another option.

 

However, it does not mean that makeup brushes can not have powders on. To reach certain effect, during custom makeup brush, some customers will require some bronze powders on the brush handles. So the makeup brush manufacturers will mix the powders into the paintings and then do the painting on the handles. At this situation, the powders become a part of the painting, enter into the painting and will not fall down, so not need to do the certification.

 

As a professional makeup brush manufacturer, we always try our best to meet customers’ requirements, while sometimes we can not control everything. For example, we have to follow the instruction of the express company during shipment. So if customers plan to send us some samples or prototypes with bronze powders to show what kind of makeup brushes they need, please do remember to check with the local shipping company to confirm if it is ok, otherwise, even if the samples can be sent from shipper, the consignee may not be able to receive them due to their local regulation.

The size of makeup brush bag

Most customers will require makeup brush bag/roll for their brushes during custom makeup brushes. While some customers may only need 3-4 brushes including a normal powder brush, an eye brush and a lip brush; some will require more than 30 brushes which include all brushes for specific application.

So some customers will have such misunderstanding that if they only need 3-4 brush types in a set, the makeup brush manufacturer will not be able to offer the brush bag. In fact, it is very easy for us to modify the size of the brush bag, roll or container according to the brushes included.

For example, if customers like a bag style which originally includes 20 brushes, but they just want 10 brushes included. It is totally no problem for us to change the bag to the required size without any extra charge.

Some may wonder if the cost will also change according to the bag size. The answer is YES. But it depends, for example, the cost of the bag for 3 brushes and 20 brushes will certainly vary a lot, but the cost for 18brushes and 20 brushes will be almost the same. Customers should communicate with the makeup brush factory base on different situation.

To custom makeup brush bag, customers should have a clear idea on the bag style/design, and the exact brushes included, then express all these details to the makeup brush manufacturer. With this information, the professional manufacturer will know how to revise the bag size and offer the exact and proper bag for the customers.

How to take makeup brush picture

During custom makeup brushes, we usually send real samples for customers’ confirmation. While sometimes, due to the expensive international shipping charge or urgent delivery, customers may require picture confirmation via email. That is, once the samples are finished, the makeup brush manufacturer takes photos of the samples and then sends the pictures to customers for their confirmation.

 

Since pictures are not real samples, the makeup brush manufacturer should try best to clearly show each detail of the brushes, for example, the size, the outline and the color etc via pictures.

 

Firstly, we should put a ruler or measuring tool beside the brushes and then take a picture of the whole brush, which can show the size of each brush part. Secondly, a close-up sequences for each part- the brush head, the ferrule and the handle. Ensure such close-up can clearly show the characters of each part; if handles with logo on, close-up for the logo is also essential to show its position and effect on the handle. Thirdly, if possible, take photos for the brushes from different visual angle- overlook/side-look etc, just do all efforts to show all aspects and characters of the brushes via pictures.

 

The purpose of the brush pictures is to show the actual brushes situation to customers, so should no Photoshop or any prettification on the pictures, otherwise, the picture confirmation will be nonsense.

 

The limit of picture confirmation is that some customers can not feel the brush material, for example, whether the hair is soft or not? The ferrule is copper or ferrule? Or the handle is wooden or bamboo or plastic? Anyway, if the customers are professional, they can judge the brush material from the pictures, which is why we can quote according to pictures. As professional makeup brush factory, we can judge the material from pictures as long as the pictures are clear enough.

About the shipment delay

Due to some natural or manmade reasons, sometimes, the shipment may have to be delayed. For example, rainy season will obstruct the painting and glue drying; mismanagement of the makeup brush manufacturer will cause the quality problem. Although natural delay is inevitable while manmade reason is avoidable, once if the delay happens, the most important thing for the makeup brush manufacturer is not to pay a lot of time to ascertain where the responsibility lies, but try best to remedy and explain to customers immediately.

 

During our communication with customers on the delay, we should firstly tell customers the reason of the delay, the update shipping date and how to compensate for the delay. The compensation differs base on different situation: if the makeup brush manufacturer promises 30 days lead time, while customers requires urgent delivery for example 20 days, and the manufacturer just agree to try best, if not able to deliver after 20 days, the manufacturer should not compensate for such delay as long as they can deliver within 30 days; but if the manufacturer promises 30 days and can not ship on time, they should make compensation.

 

If the delay cause partial shipment, for example, the order quantity is 20000pcs and the delivery time should be May 1^st. While on May 1^st, only 15000pcs can be available for shipment, and the rest 5000pcs will be finished after one week. Then the makeup brush factory should communicate with customer to check if they can firstly send the finished 15000pcs and then the rest 5000pcs. Usually, the customer will agree as long as it will not affect their selling. But since it is the fault of the makeup brush factory instead of customer, and the shipping charge for two shipments must be higher than one shipment, so the makeup brush factory should initiatively promise to afford the shipping charge difference.

 

No matter what is the situation, since the delay happens, the makeup brush manufacturers should firstly realize that it is their own responsibility, sincerely communicate with customers and initiatively take related responsibilities.

Try best to win customers’ trust

Occasionally, we may meet some customers who are always suspicious and cautious to our product quality and our credibility. Sometimes, they can not believe the product quality is good at low price; sometimes, they think you are not a makeup brush factory but just a SOHO….They usually think most Chinese makeup brush suppliers or most Chinese suppliers are cheater.

 

We are often asked to offer our business license, it is reasonable for international business. However, we once were required to offer our sales’ ID card and other personal information, although it is very unusual, we have to meet such requirement to win customers’ trust.

 

Sometimes, customers send us some brush samples and would like us to copy the brushes. While their brush samples have some quality problem, as a professional makeup brush manufacturer, we will improve on such problem and then send the better samples for customers’ confirmation. However, few customers insist that we change to worse material even if they have seen and feel the quality improvement. For example, we use better goat hair material which is softer and better than original samples at the same price, but the customers suspect that we mix some synthetic hair. Although we have explained the material difference, they just can not believe us and insist that they would the same material as their samples. It is no problem for us to change to the original material, but we really can not understand why customers prefer worse material. Also, sometimes, customers send us samples made by other makeup brush manufacturers, and we find the logos on each brush are in different directions. It is really unusual and improper for makeup brushes or any product, then we suggest customers to revise this, but our suggestion is not approved.

 

Of course, most customers trust us very much, especially the frequent customers. They would like to get suggestion from us and will be very grateful once they realize that our brush quality is better than their original samples. Just few new customers are somewhat suspicious to new suppliers.

Pantone code for makeup brush

If customers would like to have different and creative colors for the brush ferrule and handle during custom makeup brushes, they should express the exact color to the makeup brush manufacturers. While sometimes words fail to convey the exact ideas, and word description on color is far from enough. For example, customers would like to have dark red handles, but how dark? The brush factory can not promise the finished color is what customers really want. So we need a certain code which can be understood by customers and manufacturers from different locations and countries, also can show the exact color.

Pantone code is such a code; customers just need to tell manufacturers the exact pantone code, then the makeup brush factory can do accordingly. For example, 185C means a type of red color, and can be differ from 186C and 187C which show different red level.

Customization VS Branding on makeup brushes

During communication, we find that some customers do not really understand the difference between custom makeup brushes and branding/private labeling on makeup brushes. And due to the language limit, they may get wrong information from some makeup brush manufacturers who are not so skillful in English.

Here we would like to clearly explain the difference between customization and branding, so that customers can ensure exactly communication with any makeup brush factory.

Customizing makeup brushes means that customers have their own ideas and design on makeup brushes, including the material, size, color, logo etc. They do not want the existing makeup brushes from the makeup brush factory, and want their own styles.

While branding means that customers like the existing styles of the makeup brush manufacturer, but to promote their own brands, they would like to have their own logo printed on the existing brushes. Usually, branding will not change the brush material, size or color, but just change the brand.

In fact, branding is included in customization. So if customers would like to have their brand printed on the existing brushes, they can also say they would like to custom makeup brushes; but if customers would like to change the brush material, size or color, they usually should not say branding makeup brushes, it may cause confusion of the makeup brush manufacturer.

Today, we got some makeup brush samples from an international customer, there were more than 10pcs brushes and were directly put into the FEDEX envelop. After opening envelop and carefully checking the brushes, we found that a powder brush was broken. Maybe it had been broken before shipment instead of the damage during shipment. Whatever, we have sent the pictures of the broken brushes to customer to ensure if it is broken during shipment.

However, no matter it is shipment damage, customers and suppliers should be very careful about the package even if just for samples. During custom makeup brushes, the customers may need to send samples to the manufacturers for quotation, and manufacturers need to send samples/prototypes back to customers for confirmation. They usually use FEDEX/DHL/UPS to deliver the samples, and these express companies will offer free envelop/pack which is very convenient. Therefore, if the makeup brush samples are not too much, most will put the samples into envelop/pack.

Since the samples are small and in few quantity, it is ok to put them into envelop or pack, just be sure that they will not be damaged during shipment. A good way is to put the samples into bubble wrap and then put into envelop, which will prevent the brushes from being cracked during shipment. Some express companies also offer bubble envelops, which will be the best for brush sample delivery.

If without bubble wrap or bubble envelop, do not put the brushes directly into envelop, it is best to put the samples into carton package which can also prevent shipment damage.

For those who would like to exact copy their own existing brushes, they shall have stocks on hand, so it is no problem to send samples, and sometimes, they hope the brush manufacturer to keep the samples for future orders.

 

But for those who would like to copy other brands such as sigma or MAC brushes but with their own logo, they have no stocks on hand, and have to buy brushes from Sigma or MAC at high price. Therefore, they usually only buy 1pcs each, if can not get back the samples, after receiving the batch brushes, they will not sure if the brushes are exactly the same as the original ones. Firstly, the makeup brush factory will not agree to manufacture or custom makeup brushes with small or only one quantity. As the factory have to order material from their suppliers, and their suppliers have MOQ requirements on the material.

Secondly, even if the factory finally agree to make, the price will be extremely high, which is not cost-effective for the users. The time to produce 1 brush is almost the same with batch quantity. So if order 10000pcs, the cost will be shared, and the production cost on each brush will be few; but if only one brush, it should afford all production cost.

Therefore, although some users would like to have unique brushes with their own name on the brushes, after discussing with most makeup brush manufacturers, they almost have to give up.

Just like all other makeup brush manufacturers, Toney usually will not sell brushes to users who would like to buy 1pcs/set makeup brushes with their own style, unless our existing material can meet the customers’ requirements on the brush color/material/size etc.

However, if the individuals would like to do business on makeup brushes and can meet our MQO requirement, we will certainly sell any brushes to them.
