The history of makeup brush

 It is said that it is the Germans who firstly invented makeup brushes, and then this technology was spread to the United States, Japan, Korea, and finally to China. The manufacturing base also transferred from Germany-Japan-Korea-China. The production transfer mainly because labor cost and environment protection policy. As the makeup brushes are mostly a kind of manual work, so the labor cost takes very important roles in the price of makeup brushes, besides, the plating and oxidation of makeup brush aluminum ferrule and copper ferrule will cause air pollution, so some developed countries will prohibit such industry, therefore, such makeup brush factories had to transfer to other countries.

Partial shipment of makeup brushes

We are often required to expedite shipment from customers who are in urgent need of brushes or have their inventory sold out. Some customers just need a part of the order to meet urgent demands. For example, customer place an order of 1000 brush sets to makeup brush factory, but they have sold out all stocked brushes and need 100 sets to supplement their inventory. Then they will require makeup brush manufacturers for partial shipment.

However, if the order quantity is no more than 100,000pcs, partial shipment is meaningless due to production process of makeup brushes:

• We firstly order material from suppliers, if the order quantity is no more than 100,000pcs, the lead time of material is fixed, almost no difference;
• After getting material, we do incoming inspection, the inspection time difference for 1000pcs and 100,000pcs is only about 2 days.
• then do the painting and logo printing and waiting for the painting dried, this period is also fixed, almost no difference.
• after all parts-hair/ferrule/handle being ready, we then finally assemble all parts together. Our month capacity is over 3,000,000pcs, which means daily capacity is 100,000pcs, so if order quantity is not big enough, almost no difference.

If the order quantity is over 1 million pcs, it is OK to have partial shipments for quicker funds return.

About the makeup brush hair fall-off

Although more and more people fall in love with makeup brushes with 100% synthetic hair, many traditional makeup artists still prefer brushes with natural hair, as it can somewhat achieve prefect makeup due to the excellent powder pickup and release capacity.

Just like human hairs, natural hairs may break or fall off, so after getting the brushes with natural hair, we may find that some hairs fall off from the brush.

If the fall-off is serious and too many, it is quality problem, users should contact the makeup brush factory or supplier for replacements or any other possible solution. If just several hairs fall off before wash, it should be acceptable.

Here, we would like to introduce how the makeup brush manufacturers avoid hair falling during production and inspection:

During the makeup brush production, we firstly mold the natural hair shape, and then glue the hairs into ferrules to get the brush head ; after the glue is dry out, we will firstly comb the brush head by machine to remove the mess/extra/float hairs.

Also, before shipment, we will inspect the brushes to ensure qualified, the inspector will whisk the brushes for about 20 times, if the hair falling is too much, the brushes will be considered unqualified and rejected; no more than 7 hairs falling is acceptable;  Of course, we cannot keep whisking the brushes, due to the characters of natural hair, 20 times will be enough.

After getting new makeup brushes, we can check the brushes by ourselves- sweep the makeup brush on back of hand, if no hair or just several hairs falling, it can prove that the makeup brush is qualified. Please note that it is done after cleaning. After cleaning one or two times, qualified makeup brushes will not keep falling hairs.

Synthetic fiber is not so easy to fall off as animal hairs, but several bristle shedding before wash is also acceptable.

Our policy on makeup brush samples

 Almost everyday, we are required to send samples for quality checking by our customers. Some customers require the samples in our stock to see our ability and quality level as a makeup brush factory; some customers want to customize their own makeup brushes with their own design and private label, so they want to check required sample quality before ordering.

For the samples in our stock, we will not charge any sample fee, but customers should afford shipping charge. If customers have DHL/FEDEX/UPS/TNT account, they do not need to pay any to us, we can send samples immediately. But most customers have no shipping account, and want to pay the shipping charge to us and we arrange the shipment for them. Some customers cannot understand why they have to pay around USD50.0 for one single sample in our stock, they consider we charge ridiculous fees. However, such charge is shipping charge which not charged by us but the shipping agent. We can not offer any discount on such charge. For security reason, some customers insist that they will not pay the shipping charge until they have the tracking number of the samples, but the fact is: we ship the samples not via official DHL/FEDEX but their agent who can offer cheaper price, so we should firstly send the samples to them and then they will give us tracking number 1 day later. So we cannot accept shipment first without shipping charge.

For the customized makeup brush samples without logo, if we have existing material in stock, or it is easy to find the required raw material, we will not charge sample fee either, so the same situation as samples in stock, customers only need to pay shipping charge. If the brushes are special and need to order new raw material for them, we will need to charge sample fee accordingly.

If customers need logos on samples, we will always charge sample fee, as we need to develop printing plates for the logo which is expensive and we cannot afford this charge since so many sample requirements everyday. For the charged samples, we will refund the sample fee after getting mass orders. Shipping charge will not be refunded.

 During makeup brush OEM, all customers require private label on makeup brushes to promote their own brand. However, some customers hang back due to logo fee. They believe the fee to have their private label printed on makeup brushes must be very expensive and maybe not affordable if they have low budget. It is really a misunderstanding. Most customers will choose silk screen printing for their logos. Here we would like to share information on logo fee of silk printing.

The logo fee of silk printing includes plate mold fee and printing fee. Plate fee is one-off, that means customers do not need to pay for each order. One plate fee is less than USD50.0. Although customers need to pay printing fee for each brush, the printing fee is very cheap, less than RMB0.1 for each brush.

While custom makeup brush sets, customers may require different logo size on different handle sizes, different brush name or part number for each brush, or double side printing for logo and brush name. In this case, the logo cost will be higher, as makeup brush factory needs to produce different plates mold and do separate printing accordingly.

Therefore, if customers firstly order makeup brush samples with private label, the whole sample fee maybe high, especially if different samples with different handle/logo sizes and different brush names. The logo fee will be the main part of sample fee. However, if customers confirm the samples and order large quantity, they will no need to pay plate fee again, as above mentioned, plate fee is one-off fee.

But if customers change their logo design after reviewing samples or during mass production, they need to pay new logo fee for each change, as new design requires new plate mold. Customers should finalize logo design at the very beginning.

To save cost, some customers prefer no logo or printing on samples but firstly check sample quality and design. At this situation, if customers approve samples and place mass order. Before mass production, we will firstly send pictures or samples with logo for customers’ confirmation, and ensure the logo style and printing can meet customers’ requirements.

The working process if customers offer physical samples

During custom makeup brushes, the most important thing for makeup brush manufacturers is to know customers’ detailed and exact requirements. And the best situation is that customers can offer physical samples, which can avoid misunderstanding and push everything move forward quickly.

The following is our normal working process if customers offer physical samples/benchmark of makeup brushes:

1) After getting physical samples/benchmark and knowing the order quantity, we will send customers exact quotation.
2) If our quotation is OK for customers, and customers want to place orders, we will send a proforma invoice for customers’ prepayment. Our payment terms is 50% prepayment and 50% before shipment.
3) After getting prepayment, we will order material, and then produce pre-production samples for customers’ approval. Only after getting approval, we will start mass production;
4) When the production is almost finished, customers pay the balance payment, and we will send makeup brushes.
5) For shipment, if customers have Chinese forwarder, we need their contact information to arrange pickup from us; if customers need us to arrange all related shipping issues for them, we will ship via our own forwarder and customers pay the shipping charge together with the balance payment.
6) After getting shipment, customers inspect and check the makeup brushes ASAP, and contact our service department within 6 months if any quality problem.

Ferrule material of makeup brushes

 The ferrule is a very important part of makeup brushes, which connects brush head and brush handle. The ferrule shape can be straight or taper; the line can be even or convex; the surface can be once oxidation and secondary oxidation, LOGO can be laser on ferrule.

The ferrule material is usually aluminum and copper.

After communicating with many customers and users, we find that some customers do not pay much attention to ferrule material. In fact, the ferrule material is also very important to the makeup brush price. The following is the difference between aluminum ferrule and copper ferrule:

► Aluminum ferrule: Can be anodized to a variety of colors. Different thickness, brightness and oxidation effects will affect the price.

► Copper ferrule: the cost is 4-5 times of aluminum; the hardness is 10 times of aluminum ferrule. Copper ferrule is thicker/heavier/brighter/durable than aluminum ferrule. It can be plated into many colors. If customers require some special colors, the price may be higher.

However, after plating or anodizing with difference colors, we may not distinguish them by brightness. The following is some tips to distinguish copper ferrule from aluminum ferrule:
1. Copper ferrule is much heavier than aluminum ferrule, with the same brush head and handle, we can obviously feel it by ourselves;
2. Copper ferrule is thicker than aluminum ferrule, following picture for your reference:


3. Some cheap aluminum ferrules will be easily scratched, copper ferrules will not.

So during customizing makeup brushes, shall we use copper ferrules or aluminum ferrules on our brushes? It depends on your budget and target market. Many luxurious brands only accept copper ferrule due to its brightness and luxurious, as they targets to top customers, so they use best materials for each part: top grade animal/synthetic hair, copper ferrule, ebony handles. If your target market is middle/low market, it is really no necessary to pay extra cost on ferrules, use better hair material will be a better choice, after all, it is the most important part of the whole makeup brushes, and users can directly feel the quality by touching.
