Trapped moisture and air inside wood substrate (main cause)

1. Timber without sufficient drying retains high moisture. When dipped into coating and heated, internal water turns into steam, bursting through the paint film and creating pinholes.
2. Tiny air is trapped in wood grain gaps and turning scratches during dipping; the sealed paint locks air and leaves pores after curing.
3. Unremoved wood dust covers the handle surface and wraps air, forming pores after dipping.
 

Improper paint mixing & poor paint quality

1. Vigorous stirring introduces massive air bubbles. Dipping handles without defoaming resting time leaves bubbles on wood surface which turn into pores after drying.
2. Incorrect thinner matching: fast-dry thinner used under high temperature leads to rapid surface skinning, trapping internal solvent vapor.

Why Makeup Brush Copper Ferrules Tarnish Black? How to Prevent?

 Copper ferrules are standard fittings for high-end makeup brushes. However, some clients complain about dark tarnish and black spots appearing on copper ferrules after storage or a period of use, which greatly damages premium appearance of the makeup brushes and triggers after-sales issues. We will analyze all root causes and offer complete prevention solutions covering factory production and end-user maintenance.

 

Causes During Production process

1. Inadequate pre-treatment cleaning (primary cause)

Cutting oil, polishing wax, fingerprints and sweat remain on the surface after copper tube cutting and stamping, the oil residues left after improper cleaning processes, which forms dark black patches after drying.
 

2. Improper passivation and electroplating processes

· No passivation treatment, insufficient passivation duration or incomplete rinsing lead to the absence of a dense protective film on the surface.
· Thin nickel electroplating layers or pinholes in coatings allow air and moisture to penetrate and corrode the base copper, resulting in black discoloration.
· High workshop humidity and open storage of uncoated semi-finished copper tubes trigger rapid oxidation and dullness.
 

3. Material and warehousing issues

Low-purity brass contains excessive impurities and poor oxidation resistance. Without anti-tarnish bag packaging, semi-finished tubes will develop widespread black tarnish quickly in humid rainy seasons or long sea transportation.
 

4. Further contamination during assembly

Handle adhesive and bristle cleaning agents adhere to ferrules, corroding the surface and creating black spots.
 

Preventive Solutions for Production Process

1. Complete pre-treatment cleaning

 alkaline degreasing → clear water rinsing → chemical polishing → activation → multi-stage pure water rinsing, to thoroughly remove oil and fingerprints. All ferrules shall be fully dried with hot air before proceeding to subsequent procedures.

2. Standard passivation or thickened electroplating protection

· Bare copper tubes: Eco-friendly silane / BTA chromium-free passivation forms a compact anti-oxidation film and improves salt spray resistance.
· Bright gold / gunmetal finished copper ferrule: A nickel underlayer over 5μm thick is applied, followed by a top sealing electroplating layer to eliminate pinhole corrosion.

3. Workshop and semi-finished product control

Maintain workshop relative humidity between 40% and 60%. All semi-finished and finished copper ferrules shall be immediately packed in VCI vapor corrosion inhibiting bags with desiccants inside. Avoid prolonged exposure of bare tubes to air.

4. Post-assembly protective finishing

Wipe finished ferrules thoroughly and apply a thin coat of transparent metal protective wax if needed. Low-corrosion neutral adhesive is adopted to prevent chemical residue from eroding metal surfaces.

5. Moisture-proof packaging before shipment

Each brush set is packed in an independent moisture-proof bag, and desiccants are placed in outer cartons to adapt to long-distance sea transport and shipments to rainy regions.

 Long-term residual moisture

Water trapped in ferrule gaps after brush washing is not fully wiped off. Persistent moisture in bathrooms or humid southern climates causes rapid black oxidation, and verdigris will form in severe cases.

Chemical corrosion from cosmetics

Foundation, concealer and makeup removers contain oils, acids, alkalis and sulfides. If these substances stay on ferrules without timely wiping, chemical reactions generate black stains.

 Sweat and fingerprints from hands

Long-term contact with skin oils and salts damages the surface protective coating, causing local darkening.

Poor storage conditions

Storing brushes in airtight makeup bags with poor ventilation or near corrosive daily chemicals such as perfume and cleansers accelerates discoloration.

  1. Thoroughly dry brushes after washing Wipe residual water from ferrule gaps with a dry cloth each time you clean the brushes. Hang brushes bristle-side down for air-drying to avoid trapped moisture.
  2. Clean ferrule surfaces promptly Wipe off makeup and makeup remover stains with a damp soft cloth immediately; never leave cosmetic residues overnight.
  3. Minimize direct hand contact with metal ferrules Wrap brushes with soft cloth for long-term storage. Avoid repeatedly rubbing copper tubes with sweaty hands.

How to Communicate with makeup brush Manufacturers about the customized brush color

 The bristles, metal ferrules and handles of makeup brushes adopt different coloring processes. When communicating custom color requirements with a makeup brush factory, customers should classify each component, confirm  official color standards and seal approved samples to drastically reduce rework caused by color deviation.

 

Color Codes & Reference Standards

1. Only use Pantone C solid color cards and special metallic color cards to confirm the colors. Photos and screenshots are for reference only and cannot be used as inspection criteria.
2. Send physical samples of existing makeup brushes directly to the makeup brush factory; which has far higher color accuracy than color codes alone.
3. Distinguish coloring differences by material: anodized aluminum ferrules, painted copper ferrules, water-coated wooden handles and fiber bristles cannot share the same color reference standard.

 

Makeup Brush Components

1. Metal Ferrules: New custom colors require dedicated dye tanks, leading to higher MOQ per single color. Matte, glossy and satin finishes show drastically different appearances even for the same Pantone code, so surface finish must be clearly specified. Specify acceptable ΔE color tolerance in advance.

3. Bristles: Synthetic fibers cannot be freely dyed into brand-new custom shades. Fine-tune colors based on the factory’s in-stock bristle shades first. Mandate strict dry and wet rub color fastness to prevent color transfer onto skin or powder pans.

 

Sampling & Sample Sealing

1. Produce separate samples for ferrules, handles and bristles first, then assemble full brush samples for step-by-step verification to cut waste.
2. Once approved, customers and makeup brush manufacturers sign and seal physical samples, with written confirmation that mass production strictly follows these signed samples.
3. Mass production shall never commence before pre-production samples are fully approved.

 

Inspection Lighting Conditions

Color comparison inspection must be carried out under D65 standard white light. Ordinary indoor yellow or warm lighting causes inaccurate color judgment.

Why makeup brush handles painting crack?

 Many clients may encounter a common trouble: some wooden handles of newly delivered makeup brushes develop cracked paint or wood bodies after storage or use. Cracking severely downgrades product texture and triggers after-sales returns & replacements. Makeup brush manufacturers should know the causes and make improvements during makeup brush production.

 

Unqualified moisture content of wood (root cause)

If the raw wood for handles is not thoroughly dried, plenty of moisture remains inside. After delivery, the wood shrinks heavily under dry air or heating. The paint film lacks enough flexibility to follow the shrinkage, so it gets stretched and cracked; in severe cases, the wood body splits too. Big gaps of temperature and humidity between worldwide countries, long sea transportation and unstable storage humidity will worsen this issue greatly.

Non-standard painting procedures

1. Lack or thin sealing primer: Without primer barrier, internal wood moisture evaporates continuously and breaks the topcoat into fine cracks.
2. Over-thick single topcoat layer: The paint dries unevenly from surface to inner layer, forming strong shrinkage stress that causes cracking over time.

Simplified Chemical Screening

1. 365nm UV Lamp Check: No fluorescence on bristles confirms free of fluorescent whitening agents;
2. Cold Water Immersion Test: Soak brushes in ambient-temperature water for 30 mins; qualified items feature no color bleeding or pungent odor from formaldehyde or inferior solvents;
3. pH Test Strip: Aqueous extract pH value is controlled within 5.0~8.5;
4. Simplified Salt Spray Test: Ferrule soaked in salt water for 24 hours with no rusting or coating precipitation.

 

Physical Safety Inspection

· No color transfer after 50 times of dry cotton cloth rubbing;
· Hair fallout meets national standard via rolling compression test;
