How to Apply Makeup as a Man

Steps

 

1 Exfoliate. Before applying makeup, wash your face using an exfoliator and warm water. Rub your face gently in a circular motion to remove dead skin cells. Rinse with warm water and pat (dont rub) dry with a towel.

 

2 Apply Toner. Apply toner to a cosmetic pad and pat it lightly into your skin. Toner is meant to restore the skin to its natural pH level and remove any remaining dirt or dry skin cells.

 

3 Moisturize. Apply moisturizer with a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to your face and neck. Allow the moisturizer to absorb into your skin before proceeding to the next step.

 

4 Apply Concealer. Mix a little bit of concealer on the back of your hand with a fine makeup brush. Pick up a very small amount of concealer on the end of the makeup brush - you can always go back for more if you need to - and dab it on the center of a blemish. Move to the outer edge with a gentle circular motion, then blend the concealer into the skin.

 

5 Powder your Nose. Dip the tip of a powder brush in powder and dust it lightly over your forehead and face. Apply a little more pressure when you go over your upper cheekbones, to add definition.

Pony Hair Brushes

Pony hair comes from the mane of young horses and are very fine and soft. These are the typical hair used in the traditional Makeup Brushes. The very finest pony hair comes from the belly of the animal and is often blended with other hairs for less expensive watercolor and touch-up brushes. Natural tips are used in better brushes and the rest of the hair is cut into lengths and used in cheaper makeup brushes. It is strong, slightly coarse, resilient and with the exception of sheep hair, is the most absorbent.

 

Pony hair is popular in Oriental watercolor and calligraphy brush making because it can get so long. It does not have the ability to stay together when wet, so it is often partially starched or covered with an outside layer of sheep hair. Each hair contains numerous pockets that trap water and color, making them especially suitable for Sumi painting. Pony hair doesnt hold its shape well, nor does it point. Mongoose Hair Makeup Brushes

Kevrin/ Mongoose hair comes from many different countries, but most used for makeup brushes are produced in India. The hairs have a dark brown tip, cream-colored center, and dark roots. These brushes are strong, resilient and makes a good long wearing, medium to professional quality brush for oil and acrylic painting. Mongoose hair has a unique structure, giving it a stiffness somewhere between sable and bristle and is distinguished by it coloration of dark brown tips, a light middle band and dark roots.

Camel Hair Makeup Brushes

A "camel" brush is not made of camel hair. It is a generic term for soft-haired makeup brushes that are made of various inexpensive hairs such as pony, bear, sheep, and lesser grades of squirrel mixed together and supposedly named after the man who originated it. Camel hair brushes received their name from "Mr. Camel", who invented them.

 

Actual camel hair is too woolly for brushes and they range greatly in softness, quality and cost. These soft-haired brushes are made of pony, ox, goat or other inexpensive hair, or a mixture. Horse of pony hair is taken from the mane, tail, hock or belly. Natural tips are used in better brushes. Camel hair brush is most commonly used in inexpensive school grade brushes or as makeup brush. Ox hair is taken from the ears or hock. It has medium stiffness and resiliency, carries much fluid but will not point well s it has a blunt tip. Goat hair has a naturally blunt tip but retains a large volume of fluid.

 

Camel hair brushes are used in mottler, mops, makeup brushes and Oriental brushes. Lesser grades are used in school brushes and, like pony, it can be used in blends or filler. These brushes work well for dusting parts and also in touch-up work for applying paint and adhesives.
