If you have makeup habit, you must have some makeup brushes. I am a makeup brush complex, has found a good makeup brush supplier in Taobao, and has bought a makeup brush set (9 brushes) from her.
Everyone know that good quality makeup brushes can last ten years, while if you do not maintain them periodically, it will certainly short brush life. I am always bothered by brush cleaning, after searching on internet, I find the professional makeup brush cleanser are rather expensive. For the poor like me, it is almost bankrupted to buy makeup brushes, so really can not afford the expensive cleanser.
So I asked the seller, she told me to use Bath Foam or Amway liquid detergent. I tried, it works well for eyeshadow brushes and blush brushes, however, for lip brushes, foundation brushes, Eyeliner Brushes and Concealer Brushes, it does not work at all.
Finally I get inspiration from makeup remove, I find that makeup remover oil is the best product to remove makeup, even if the waterproof mascara can also easily removed, the theory is that oil can dissolve powder substance. So my method is: take some cooking oil(you can also use makeup remover oil), and dip the brush into the oil, the press and let brush absorb as much oil as it can, then you will find that the powder substance will float on brush surface and be dissolved by oil; after that, clean the brush by liquid detergent, as liquid detergent can remove oil.
I believe every house has cooking oil, and per my experience, clean by cooking oil and remover oil is totally same in effects. I also tried remover lotion and foam, the effects are bad, not good as cooking oil.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes
You know you shouldnt keep mascara for more than three months; it rarely lasts that long, anyway. Also, your favorite eyeshadow isnt around long enough to need an expiration date. But have you considered your makeup brushes? Good quality makeup brushes can last for years, which is wonderful on the budget; however, if you dont wash them regularly, it can be awful for your complexion and allow that accumulated dirt and bacteria to go right back on your skin every time you apply powder.
Minimum: Once Weekly
You heard it right--once a week should be the minimum and not just for the over-achievers or the germaphobic. Choose a regular day of the week, or have a little brush cleaning ritual every weekend. Before you paint your fingernails is best.
Problem Skin: Daily
If you deal with acne or random outbreaks, have rosacea or very sensitive skin, you should wash your makeup brushes daily. Simply make it part of your regular beauty regime every morning. It only takes a few extra moments to wash those makeup brushes and your skin will thank you.
Using Shampoo
The most common method of cleaning makeup brushes is to simply hold each brush under warm running water, lather up with a tiny bit of shampoo, rinse clean and then allow to air dry. When drying, stand the makeup brushes up or lay them so the bristles are hanging off the edge of the sink; you dont want them to simply sit in accumulated water and stay soaked all day. They wont be clean and it can cause damage to the brushes. For those with very sensitive skin, a gentle makeup remover or a baby shampoo might be the best choice for cleansing makeup brushes.
Using Special Products
There are special makeup brush cleansers available and they will work fine to clean your makeup brushes. Essentially, most are the same as any gentle cleanser. Play around and see what works best on your brushes and if your skin seems to react to any particular product. Be sure that whatever cleansing option you choose, you dont have any soapy residue left in your brushes after the final rinse.
When to Replace makeup brushes
Good quality makeup brushes can endure a lot of washing and using. All good things do come to an end eventually, so when you notice the bristles getting fuzzy, breaking off, or refusing to lay flat, its time to replace the brush.
Make Your Own Makeup Brush Cleaner
Cleaning your makeup brushes is very important to keep infections and other ickiness from contacting with your skin. However, makeup brush cleaner is rather expensive, so why not make your own makeup brush cleaner out of stuff you have in your house?
It is very easy
Instructions
Things you’ll need:
- dish or container to mix ingredients in
- spoon to mix with
- 1 cup distilled or purified water
- 1 tablespoon alcohol
- 1 tablespoon shampoo (baby shampoo or a gentle shampoo work best)
- 1 tablespoon leave in conditioning spray (optional)
- measuring cup
- measuring spoons
- bottle to put the cleaner in when finished
1. To make your own makeup brush cleaner, you must first, combine your water, alcohol, shampoo, and leave in conditioning spray into your mixing container or dish.
2. Next, stir the ingredients SLOWLY. If you stir too quickly it could cause the shampoo to suds up, which is exactly what you dont want, so take your time mixing.
3. Last, but not least, simply pour the mixture into a bottle and start cleaning your brushes. If you dont have a steady hand, you may want to use a funnel for this last step. I like to put half of the mixture into a small spray bottle and half into a regular bottle so that I can use it to deep clean and spot clean my brushes.
Tips & Warnings
- Adding the leave in conditioner is not necessary, but it will keep the hairs on your makeup brushes soft.
- Keeping your makeup brushes clean is absolutely necessary to avoid infections.
- If you have an infection in your eyes such, avoid using your makeup brushes as you dont want the bacteria on your brushes or in your makeup. Applying makeup over infections can also slow down the healing process.
- Keep the mixture out of the reach of children!
Clean your makeup brushes if you want a healthy skin
Your makeup brushes and applicators may breed grounds for bacteria, which can lead to acne, clogged pores, and impurities on your skin. Not so pretty. On January 26, health and beauty blog, Blisstree offered a few tips to keep your makeup brushes fresh and tidy.
First step, make sure your makeup hasnt expired. Mascara, because of its proximity to the eyes, should be replaced every three months, states Blisstree. "Most other makeup should be discarded after one year," said Dr. Carol L. Clinton, of skincare company Timeless Skin Solutions, in the article. "Youll notice that its consistency changes, and that any SPF in the product will have deteriorated."
Her advice: Clean your makeup brushes weekly to keep a significant amount of bacteria from accumulating in the brush. If you use a makeup brush daily to apply liquid makeup, however, youll need to clean it daily.
Blisstrees tips for cleaning makeup brushes:
1. Shampoo or facial cleaner: Since most makeup brushes are made of natural hair, dabbing some shampoo into the palm of your hand and swirling the brush around in it under warm water should do the trick. Facial cleaners work well too.
2. Vinegar and water: To kill bacteria on your makeup brushes, make a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water. Dip the brush into the vinegar solution and rinse in clean warm water.
3. Makeup brush cleaners: You can also purchase a specialized makeup brush cleaner, with some options to spray on and wipe off. Prices range from around €10 to €25. Sephora sells one for around $14/€11, as do Clinique and Bare Escentuals.

Why does bacteria grow in the makeup brush
When you use makeup brushes, cosmetic residue combined with dust and moisture gets trapped in the fine bristles of the makeup brush, leading to bacterial growth. As professional makeup brush manufacturer, our makeup brushes are processed by our anti-bacterial technology. However, proper maintenance is still required. This means washing your makeup brushes with regularity

cleaning makeup brushes
Obviously we can say to just use makeup brush cleaner and send you on your way. But without knowing the correct ways of cleaning your makeup brushes and why or why not to use certain items on them, you may end up a bit lost. Here we will expand on our initial introduction of cleaning brushes and list some more in-depth and alternative ways to clean your makeup brushes and how to incorporate makeup brush cleaner in these procedures.
Why cleaning makeup brushes?
Why else? Because they are dirty! Cleaning your makeup brushes is necessary. If you don’t , they will become flawed beyond use and without cleaning out the old makeup it will ruin your new makeup during application. The other reason is for skin health care reasons. Cleaning your brushes keeps germs and other bacteria from forming on them and getting on and into your skin. You want to have the healthiest and best looking skin possible. This isn’t going to happen with dirty makeup brushes. It is probably no surprise that you would need to do this but there, now it is said.
What is a makeup brush made of?
The materials in a brush are defined by its purpose but most of all its quality. If you have a cheap makeup brush it is probably made from plastic or a sponge type material. When you start getting into the professional makeup brushes, they will be made of animal hair, typically sable. High quality brushes consisting of natural hair are used by the pros and can be found at art supply stores if no where else. Other types of animal hair are also used but most importantly you want something that spreads your makeup evenly and without much trouble.
Cleaning makeup brushes gives them a much longer lifespan.
You don’t want to have to keep replacing those nice expensive brushes now do you? Of course not! Cleaning your makeup brushes consistently keeps the bristled from becoming clogged up with residual makeup. You will find that after a few uses they will already began to become less accurate during makeup application and will not give as smooth a layer as they did before. Also, and very importantly, cleaning makeup brushes also gets rid of bacteria that has the potential to harm your skin. Your facial skin is very sensitive and can easily break out or get infected from a bacteria covering your brush. This is also the reason that we advise against sharing makeup brushes with others. You don’t know another person’s hygiene and what is on their face might have a bad reaction once it is on your face. Also, if someone is applying something to your face with their hands, there is no harm in making sure that they are washed. It’s your face after all.
So, how do we wash them?
Here is a step by step guide to cleaning your brushes
1. After you are finished applying makeup, use a makeup brush cleaner. Either spray the brush and gently wipe off the excess or poor some into a paper towel and wipe the brush with that. If you don’t have any cleaner a baby wipe will do. Doing this will help the buildup and you won’t have to wash them as often.
2. Once every week or 2, fill you will want to fill up your sink or a large bowl with a few inches of warm water. You can add more water if you have a large selection of brushes to clean. Put a tiny bit of antibacterial shampoo and mix it up in the water. Be sure the shampoo is not a combination of shampoo and conditioner.
3. Dip the bristles into the water. Be sure to only get the bristles wet and not the base as overtime you can harm the handle and the adhesive holding it together. After dipping in the water, use your fingers or the palm of your hand and lather up the bristles. Rinse off the shampoo under the water thoroughly. Repeat as necessary.
4. After it is clean to your satisfaction, gently pat the brush in a towel to get only the excess water. Reshape the bristles appropriately so they dry correctly and then lay them out to dry. This will generally take a while to dry so be sure to do this the night before you need to use them.
That’s all there is to it. There are other methods using different cleaning liquids. Rubbing alcohol is one but that can be a bit abrasive to the bristles and will dry them out, but its your call. Our advice is if it’s something you wouldn’t put on your face or hair, don’t use it. Also, an anti-bacterial face wash can be used instead of shampoo.
Bonus Info
- When washing, only get the bristles wet, try to keep everything else as dry as you can.
- If you cannot get the brushes clean after many repeats of this method, the brush might be a lost cause. Time to replace.
- Tea tree oil is a good addition as it is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal as well as being all natural.
- Make sure you have enough time to let the brushes dry before your next use. Do not try to use a wet brush.

Makeup brush smells? how do I clean it?
Q: I found a few of my old makeup brushes and I was going to use them. But the bristles on one of them smells really bad. And I dont know how to clean it. I dont want to soap it or anything because then the left over of the soap will dry and then irritate my face. How can I clean it and get the smell out of it. I dont even know what cause it to smell. I was in a container stocked away.
A: You should get some professional makeup brush cleansers or any from your drugstore. What I do to clean my makeup brush is take olive oil and dip my brush in it and rub the brush on a paper towel and you will see all the excess color come out of the brush. Keep doing this do the brush until all the color is out. Then mix shampoo in a bowl of water and clean your makeup brushes. Do not go past the metal part because you don’t want the glue to loosen and break off. Then once the makeup brushes are dry swipe them across your hand to check if there is any more olive oil residue and if so use the shampoo again. The shampoo will condition your brushes and treat them gently as you do to your hair and dish soap is fine too. Then your brushes should smell like your shampoo.
The makeup brushes smell
Many girls are very worried about the smell of their makeup brushes, and are wondering if that means the makeup brushes is bad in quality. If fact, even the best makeup brushes from the famous brush brands also have some smell.
It is very normal phenomenon. You can get rid of that smelly smell with a simple home-made deodorizer under the following steps:
•1 Combine all ingredients together in a container. You will see a slight fizzing because of baking soda. This is normal.
•2 Place makeup brush in a circular container such as a glass, or cup. Make sure that the brush will be able to stand upright.
Fill container up to barrel line (the part where the bristles are coming from stem).
•3 Allow to sit in solution for no more than five minutes. Remove and gently squeeze liquid from makeup brush. Be sure to keep shape of brush by sculpting with fingers. Allow to sit for another two minutes and them wash brushes as usual.
Allow to dry over night flat on a clean napkin (depending on density and size of brush).
Now you have some fresh clean new makeup brushes!

Applying makeup is an easy proposition when you keep your makeup brushes clean. Makeup brushes are known to harbor lots of bacteria, dirt and dust, and frequent washing can damage brush bristles, making them less than optimal. Prevent dirt and dust accumulation as well as bacterial growth with proper care. Below are some pointers and tips on how to care for your professional makeup brushes.
TIP #1
Always clean the makeup brush after each use with special brush cleaner because it is gentle on your brush. Spray the brush cleaner on the clean cloth and wipe the brush clean, clearing away makeup residue. Let air dry.
If washing is necessary then you need to:
1) Run the bristles under running warm water
2) apply a small amount of a good quality shampoo (not the one you get from the market) to bristles and work into a light lather.
3) Rinse the bristles throatily under warm running water. You will then see the old makeup leaving the brush
4) Continue rinsing the brush under warm running water until no more color is leaving the brush.
5) Allow the brush to air dry. Now the makeup brush is ready to be used again.

Cleaning different makeup brushes
1. Lip brushes
The lip gloss is sticky, so every time we should move the extra lip gloss with cosmetic tissue. If use different color lip gloss, we should clean the lip brushes with lip cleansing cream, then wipe the brush again with watered tissue..
Also the pony lip brushes is easy to lose hair, so should be gentle while cleaning
If the brushes are made by natural hair, wipe the brushes with cosmetic tissue at once after using. If want to change color, dip the brushes with enough translucent power, then shake off the powder, repeat the above steps several times, then wipe with tissue. Generally, the brushes should be deeply cleaned every 3-6 months.
3. Eye brushes and lash brushes
After using, clean the lash brushes by removing the mascara with tissue, no need further cleaning. The eye brush hair is rather stiff, so it is easy to clean. If you feel the eye brushes are too dirty, then clean with soap.

The Importance to clean makeup brushes
Youve spent a great deal of time and money collecting the perfect makeup brush set to apply your makeup. Each makeup brush is beautiful and perfectly designed for a unique task, one for foundation, powder, blush, one for sweeping, smudging, blending... but how are you taking care of your makeup brush set? Do you pack your dirty makeup brush away, hoping all the makeup will magically disappear from within their bristles by tomorrow? Do you blow hard on them or wipe them with a tissue, only to find yesterdays color making an appearance in todays makeup?
- Foundation brushes get hard and clumpy
- Powder brushes get build-up which you transfer onto your face (eye)
- Eyeshadow brushes hold dark colors (reusing a brush with a lighter shade may result in more of a "night on the town" kind of look rather than an office look)
- They catch little hairs and dust
- They are gross.
Cleaning your makeup brushes is a very important process that every makeup lover should be utilizing. Makeup brushes harbor lots of bacteria, oils and dirt. Cleaning your brushes HIGHLY helps reduce acne does your skin a huge favor. Read on to find out how to clean your makeup brushes quickly and effectively.
How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things youll need:
· A mild face cleanser or shampoo
· Water/Sink
· A small towel or washcloth
1. To begin, gather your dirty makeup brushes and take a trip to the powder room. To clean your makeup brushes you can use a mild face cleanser (such as Cetaphil), a mild shampoo (such as baby shampoo), or an actual brush cleaner. I believe they are all equally effective.
2. Turn on your sink to a nice Luke-warm temperature. You will be cleaning ONE brush at a time. Grasp your first makeup brush and hold it under the running water (brush end down, never run the water over your brush in the opposite way of the bristles) until completely saturated.
3. Once your makeup brush is completely wet, pump or pour a decent amount of chosen cleanser into the palm of your hand. Lather up your makeup brush in your hand with the soap by swirling the brush around in it and working it into the bristles. You will notice the soap turning the color of your makeup. Rinse your hand and brush and continue the process until no more makeup is coming off/out of your brush.
4. Repeat this process for each makeup brush.
5. Lastly, lay out your small towel or washcloth on the counter. Gently squeeze all the water out of each makeup brush and shake- this way the bristles take a more natural form. Shape the makeup brush if needed and lay on your towel with the brush head slightly over the counter edge. Let dry and youre ready to use your makeup brushes again!
Tips & Warnings
· You should clean your makeup brushes at LEAST once per week.
· Dont blow dry your makeup brushes.
· Dont boil your makeup brushes.
· Dont use extremely hot water on your makeup brushes.
· Doing any of the above can loosen the glue holding the bristles in causing your makeup brushes to fall apart.
