Customers decide their brushes

Recently, we are almost crazy by a customer.

It is known that our MOQ is 500pcs each at least, but she only needs 100pcs, then we express our apology for not be able to help her. We believe that she must give up and look for another makeup brush supplier. Such issue often happens.

However, she called again and again to require us to make 100pcs for her. Customer is god; it is really hard for us to refuse her again and again, so we finally agree to make 100pcs for her just in high price. She accepts.

At the very beginning, she required MAC quality brushes, so we sent her the quotation. After getting the quotation, she was satisfied and said she will arrange the payment ASAP. Then we began to order materials for production.

But, in the next day, she called us again and asked if we can change the hair color, ferrule color and handle shape. Due to the low order quantity, any change will cause cost increase, so we quoted her new price and canceled the material order to wait for her update.

Unfortunately, she had a new idea on the brushes in the next morning, and would like to have two-tone color for each brush, that is really hard for such low quantity, we told her that will greatly increase the cost and it will be better if she can increase the quantity. She refused and said price was not a problem. So we quoted her again and express our hope that she can finalize the brush types she need and then contacted us for quotation.

She agreed and said she would put the brushes together and then sent to us. Anyway, the same situation happened everyday, we heard the same sentence everyday: if I do not want this type, can you suggest another proper one for me...? This really tortured us.

Although we have expressed that she should decide and finalize every detail on the brushes, and then ask for quotation from the makeup brush supplier, she still persist in her old ways.

We really hope that such issue not happen again or at least not happen often. As a makeup brush manufacturer, we are professional than some customers who just step into this field, it is ok to give some of our suggestion. However, for custom makeup brushes, customers decide everything. It will make us crazy if we always quote and quote but customers always change their ideas and preference.

Use alcohol to remove glue remnant

While unpacking the makeup brushes, some customers may notice some yellow dirt on makeup brush ferrule and handle, the dirt is actually glue remnants.

 

We all know that to connect the ferrule with hair and handle, the makeup brush manufacturers have to use glue. Theoretically, the workers must remove the dirt after the production; during inspection, the makeup brushes with such dirt should be unqualified and returned to the production line to be reworked. While sometimes, to expedite the production, some irresponsible workers may not remove the dirt and the inspectors also just ignore it. This is really bad for customers, as the makeup brushes with such glue remnants are very ugly and will drop down the quality level of the makeup brushes.

 

No matter the brush material is in top grade or low grade, the makeup brush suppliers should ensure the beautiful appearance of the makeup brushes. But if unfortunately customers receive makeup brushes with the ugly glue remnants, you can choose to return the brushes to the suppliers to require the brushes reworked, or you can remove the dirt by yourselves if the unqualified quantity is not so more and you urgently need the brushes to be launched.

 

Then, how to remove the glue remnants by ourselves? Well, a cloth and a bottle of alcohol will be enough. Buy a bottle of alcohol from a shop or drugstore, and use a clean cloth with alcohol to clean the brush ferrule and handle; you will find that the glue remnants can be easily removed and the ferrule and handle become shinning. Just remember that after that, you should put the brush in a cool and dry place to ensure that the alcohol moisture will not leave on the makeup brushes.

 

However, if the unqualified quantity is too much and the brush are not in urgent need, customers should return the makeup brushes and require the makeup brush supplier to rework them, it is really their responsibility to supply perfect and beautiful makeup brushes.

Be a professional and reliable makeup brush supplier

As the human beings, we can not control everything, but we should try our best to be a professional and responsible person. Especially for business, no matter what happened, we should do whatever we can do to protect our partners’ interests and maintain our fame and credit.

 

During makeup brush production, we often meet this or that unavoidable problem. For example, these days, I am seriously sick and need to be in the hospital, while I notice that it is nearly the time to deliver one order. If we can not ship the goods on time, my customer and our factory will burden huge lost. Before going into hospital, I must arrange everything to ensure punctual delivery. Firstly, check with the production department about the production schedule; then forwarder all related documents and orders to my colleague, explain all details to him/her and ensure him/her completely understand all customer’s requirements on the makeup brushes; also report all related information to my superior about this order; finally, before the shipment, even having been in the hospital, call the production department, my colleague and superior to ensure everything go on well.

 

The salesman’s action directly affects the fame and credit of the makeup brush manufacturer, so each salesman should have good sense of responsibility. No matter what happened, firstly try your best to protect the customers’ and factory’s interests.

 

As the makeup brush supplier, we can not live alone; we always need customers’ support. Only after getting customers’ trust, we can get their supports.

 

Being responsible and reliable is not just a talk; we should value each order and each customer. Keep all promises we once made to customers no matter what happened! If finally we failed to keep the promise even we have tried our best, we should truly explain everything to customers, try to get their understanding and minimize the losses.

Customers and suppliers are equal during cooperation

We all know that a success business needs cooperation of buyer and seller, both of them need to work together to handle everything happened during business and achieve win-win situation.

 

While some buyers or customers have no such idea, they believe they are superior to sellers since they are the one who pay the money. Even at the very beginning, buyers and sellers have not reach any agreement and buyers have not paid any money, they still think they are in the higher grade than the sellers.

 

We often meet such customers during business. For example, we send emails to a customer to promote our makeup brushes; the customer shows interests to the makeup brushes and would like to get some samples. As a makeup brush supplier and manufacturer, it is ok for us to offer some existing samples to customers with no charge, but we require customers to afford the shipping charge of samples. We believe it is fair, both of buyer and seller should take some responsibility during the cooperation establishment.

 

While, some customers do not think so, per their understanding, since the sellers want to win business from them, the sellers should undertake all potential risks and should not require customers to take any responsibility!

 

We do not know why they have such ideas. It is true that we would like to get business opportunity from them, but it is the opportunity for both sides. If can establish cooperation, the makeup brush manufacturer can really get more business, but the buyers can also get a better supplier with low price or better quality. Both sides will get profits from success cooperation. Therefore the buyers and sellers are equal during cooperation or initial cooperation establishment.

 

As the makeup brush manufacturers and suppliers, we should not have such ideas that customers are superior to us! At any situation, we need to hold our mutual benefit cooperation principles. If our sample policy is we offer free samples but customers afford shipping charge, then strictly keep such policy during cooperation, no matter how famous or strong. We believe any good and reasonable customer will understand and agree such policy.

 

Be neither humble nor arrogant, but equal.

Makeup brushes for low-end market

We understand that not all people can afford top grade makeup brushes; some will prefer the cheapest brushes, as long as it can apply cosmetics.

So, as a makeup brush factory, to meet customers’ requirements, we manufacture not only high grade makeup brushes, but also low grade makeup brushes, so that our customers can have many options during custom makeup brushes.

For high grade makeup brushes, we have described a lot about all details before; here we would like to emphasize the low grade makeup brushes.

First is the material: the hair of low grade makeup brushes is usually low grade goat hair and pony hair. The low grade goat hair includes: SQ goat hair, 2# goat hair and 10# goat hair, the most common is the SQ goat hair as it is the cheapest. For the customers who just need cheapest price, SQ goat hair is the best choice. Pony hair is usually used on eyeshadow brushes, as it is softer than SQ goat hair and will not hurt eye skin. 2# and 10# goat hair are usually used on KABUKI brushes as they are better than SQ goat hair. To save cost, the ferrule material of low grade makeup brushes is aluminum, and the handle is plastic or low grade wood.

Second is the package: the low grade makeup brushes usually have no brush bag, or only has low grade brush bag. They are usually packed on PVC bag or OPP bag which is very cheap.

Third is the MOQ: Due to the low cost, the MOQ of the low grade makeup brushes are higher than high grade brushes. For large brushes, the MOQ is usually 2000pcs, for mini brushes, the MOQ is usually 10K pcs. Therefore, the customers who require low grade brushes must have large demand; otherwise, no makeup brush manufacturers will accept the order to produce these low grade brushes.

Forth is the margin: due to the low cost, makeup brush suppliers have low margin on each low grade brush. For example, the unit price of a brush is USD0.2, even the factory or suppliers have 20% margin, they can only have USD0.04 on each brush, even the order quantity is 10Kpcs, the total profit they can get is USD400.0, that is the reason why most makeup brush suppliers do not willing to accept orders of low grade brushes.

Also, the low grade brushes also have difference on quality. Customers’ requirements on the size/brightness/color/luster of ferrule and handle will also affect the brush price. So it is best if customers can let us know their target price.

The painting on makeup brush handles

It has been keeping raining for half a month in China, although the wet weather has no affect on the production or transportation, it really affects the delivery time.

 

The reason is: the wet weather affects the handle painting. Usually, the painting will be dry within 5 days, but in rainy day, it will be 7-10 days, if with bright painting, the period will be longer.

 

If the customers need the products urgently, some makeup brush suppliers may send the shipment even if the painting is not completely dry, and most of them will not tell the customers about such situation since it will have no big affects on the quality.

 

But as a reliable makeup brush supplier, we believe it is our responsibility to tell customers everything about the products. So if customers need urgent delivery, we will always tell them the painting is not completely dry, some customers can not understand this and worry about the quality, some may even want to reject the brushes as long as they get known the painting is not completely dry. Most old customers will understand and accept this as long as the drying time is not far away than required days.

 

In fact, it will have no affects as long as the drying time is not so far away than required days. For example, the required drying days is 5 days, if the actual drying time is 4 days, that should no problem, but if just 2 days, that will cause some problem and may affect the quality. If the drying time is too short, it may cause some scratches on the handles, if so, customers can require rejects or replace the handles.

 

Anyway, the makeup brush suppliers should tell customers all situations during production. If customers require urgent delivery but the drying time is not enough, we should tell customers such situation and let customers decide. Only after getting customers’ confirmation, we can move to next step.

The shipping ways of makeup brushes

Usually, the quotation of the makeup brushes will not include shipping charge, the makeup brush suppliers usually quote EXW or FOB price to the customers. At the very beginning, no one can ensure the shipping way, the shipping charge is uncertain, so the suppliers can only quote FOB or EXW price.

 

Once the delivery time and package details are confirmed, the shipping way needs the attention of both customers and suppliers. Usually, there are 3 general shipping ways: by sea, by air and by express. Each way has its own advantages and disadvantages:

 

By sea: the advantage is low fee, and disadvantage is long period and complex operation. Also, although the shipping charge by sea is usually the lowest, but for small volume, the fee is even higher than by air, if the volume is not enough for a container, it will need LCL shipping which is very complex and with high fee. For the makeup brush factory, they do not like shipment by sea, as they have to prepare so many documents, contact forwarder, book shipping space etc. For customers, by sea is too slow and contains certain risks during the long trip, also customers need to arrange transportation to deliver packages from the sea port.

 

By air: it is the most common shipping ways, quicker than sea and cheaper than express. The makeup brush suppliers just need to send packages and related documents to the warehouse of forwarder, and once the airline confirmed, the package will reach customers within 5 days. Most airlines will offer door to door service, so customers no need to arrange extra transportation.

 

By express: The suppliers love this shipping way most, as they even no need to send the packages to forwarder, the express staff will come to suppliers’ location and pick up the packages, suppliers just need to give related papers to the express staff, and after 3 days, the customers will certainly get the packages in good condition. The only disadvantage is high fee. However, now many express companies are offering attractive and big discounts on the fees, for example, DHL will offer 70% discounts in certain period, then the fee is almost the same as by air. It is really attractive for many customers.

 

For makeup brush industry, except really large orders, most customers will not prefer sea shipment. They usually choose air, but now due to the big discounts of express companies, sometimes, they will consider deliver by express.

How to avoid potential delay on shipment

Many customers may have such experience that the makeup brush suppliers delay the shipment frequently, although you have complained this for many times and expressed your disappointment for such delay, the suppliers also promise that such delay will not happen any more. However, your next shipment is delayed again!

 

The reason is most Chinese makeup brush factories are small workshop, the management and production control is somewhat weaker than other industries, although your suppliers do try their best, the production and delivery is often out of their control.

 

In fact, it is not difficult for customers to avoid such problem; just let the suppliers realize that it will bring them a great lost for any delay. For example, the customers can indicate in the purchase order or agreement that if any delay happens, the suppliers must pay penalty to customers, say, 1% of total amount for each day delay. That is, if the total amount of the order to custom makeup brushes is USD1000, the delivery date on the orders is August 20^th, but the real delivery date is August 30^th, then the suppliers should pay USD100.0 to customers! That is really a great threat to the makeup brush suppliers or manufacturers. I believe no supplier will ignore such terms and will try best to deliver the brushes in time.

 

Although we are the makeup brush factory, we should try best avoiding the risks of ourselves; someone may not understand why I teach customers this, I really believe it is my responsibility to avoid of customers risks. I am suffered a lot due to my suppliers’ delay on shipment. And per my experience, after adding such term in the agreement, my material is seldom delayed; my orders always have the priority during the suppliers’ the production!

The chinchilla hair supply in China

As long as you know something about the makeup brushes or this industry, you may know that makeup brushes with chinchilla hair are very expensive. I have explained why they are expensive in my previous article, here no repeat again.

I would like to say here in this article is about the supply of chinchilla hair in China.

Due to the precious and expensive, not so many factories in China can afford the risks to supply such hair. From what I have known, there are just 4 factories in China can make the chinchilla hair, and all Chinese makeup brush manufacturers who want to manufacture makeup brushes with chinchilla hair have to buy from these 4 suppliers.

It is greatly different from the goat hair, pony hair or even sable hairs have hundreds or thousands suppliers in China. As these hairs are so common that the suppliers can store a lot of amount in inventory, even if the customers suddenly cancel the orders, it is no risks for the suppliers, as there must be a lot of other customers need the hairs, as long as the makeup brush market does not die, they can sell these hairs out.

But chinchilla hair is totally different, first, just few customers need such expensive brushes, if they suddenly cancel orders, it will be very difficult to sell them to other customers. Also due to the high cost, capital turnover will be another problem for the suppliers.

Therefore, despite of the high profit, not all makeup brush suppliers are happy to accept the orders to custom makeup brushes with chinchilla hair. And even if they accept the order, the payment terms may be strict; they must require some deposit before production.

The importance of carton package

Some customers may often get brushes with poor or damaged packages. Although the brushes within are really in good quality, it really make customers unsatisfied due to the poor quality of packages.

Usually, the makeup brush package includes outer cartons, inner cartons, brush bags, and OPP bags for individual brushes.

The most important is the outer cartons which can directly prevent the makeup brushes from transportation damage. If the delivery distance is not so far and no need transshipment, the outer cartons are usually duplex; while for long distance and need transshipment, especially for international shipment, the cartons must be triple, so that they can avoid of damage during transportation. Think about that: if you are the customers and you get packages which almost torn to pieces, will you be happy? So the outer cartons are the most important.

Despite of the importance of outer cartons, the inner carton is very essential as the second guard of the brushes. Sometimes, transportation damage is unavoidable since we can not control the transportation, then the inner cartons take great roles. Also the inner cartons can make the counting more easily. Put makeup brushes into individual inner cartons and mark the quantity of each inner carton, that will be much better than just put all brushes into the outer cartons.

The brush bags and OPP bags are the standard packages during custom makeup brushes; the customers must have exact and clear requirements on them, here no repeat any more.

During custom makeup brushes, customers may ignore the requirements on inner and outer cartons, then to save money, some makeup brush manufacturers may use bad cartons or even no inner cartons for the brushes! Sometimes, they do not use inner cartons maybe because the order quantity is too small, and the carton factory do not agree to make so few cartons, so they have to put all brushes into the outer cartons; sometimes maybe because their quotation does not include the package fee as customers do not mention such requirement.

Anyway, during communication, customers should clearly express their detailed requirements not only on brushes but also on packages, so that the makeup brush suppliers can clearly understand your requirements and send you exact brushes and packages.

Sell makeup brushes on taobao

Almost all Chinese know Taobao which is a Shop on-line platform for buyers and sellers, just like eBay. Now due to the popularity of Taobao, many factories and manufacturers join this platform to gain more business and profits.

After reviewing the makeup brush suppliers on Taobao, we find that the makeup brush factory will have great advantages on price and quality. It is easy to understand that the factory can offer factory direct price, and can directly control the quality. Therefore, if the factories sell brushes on Taobao, they will certainly get more opportunities.

Also, selling brushes on Taobao can really gain much more profits. For example, the cost of a makeup brush set may just ￥4.0, the selling price may be ￥60.0. That is because there is no quantity limit or MOQ on Taobao, the buyers may just need one set, so they can understand they have to pay higher price.

Therefore, comparing to traditional batch orders, the manufacturers can really gain much more profits. But it does have disadvantages. The sellers on Taobao undertake more risks. In order to deliver brushes once the buyers submit buying requirement, they have to stock enough quantity in advance, if the stocked items are not popular and less buyer like them, the sellers have to afford the cost by themselves. Also, to get higher ranks during so many competitors, they may need to pay Taobao some fees to get better service, for example, the sellers on taobao mall may need to pay ￥30000 to taobao, which can show their credit and quality to buyers. The total amount of taobao mall fee and the inventory cost may reach ￥300,000, which is unaffordable for many factories. While for traditional batch orders, no such problem, the makeup brush factory will not start production until get certain orders from customers.

Thus, if have enough funds, it will be a good choice for makeup brush factory to sell brushes on Taobao mall.

Why the big cosmetics brands usually do not accept new suppliers

Since there are so many companies who manufacture and sell color cosmetics, there must be a lot of chances for makeup brush manufacturers and suppliers to promote their products; also since Made-in-China products have been so popular around the world, the Chinese makeup brush factories may have more chances to gain orders from these companies.

While the fact is, most makeup brush manufacturers can not gain orders from famous brands like MAC, BB, Lancôme etc, therefore, although the sales of the Chinese makeup brush factory send hundreds emails to these brands, they seldom get any feedback.

The reason is that these companies have had there regular suppliers who may be the manufacturer, trading company or distributors from china or other countries. They only accept these suppliers, as they must have done a lot of work before establishing relationship with these suppliers: they must have come to the makeup brush factory to fulfill factor audit, evaluate the makeup brush quality as well as the delivery issues during their previous cooperation. If they aim to accept another factory or supplier, everything needs to be back to the very beginning step, which will waste a lot of time, money and manpower. And if the new suppliers are not better or even much worse than the previous suppliers, it is really a great loss. Therefore, sourcing new suppliers is somewhat not cost-effective and really has big potential risks. That is the major reason why the famous brands would like to keep relationship with the original suppliers as long as there is no big or serious conflict.

In fact, the makeup brush manufacturers should not limit on these famous brands, there are so many trading companies and not so famous color cosmetics companies who would like to do business with us, and these customers have very big potential.  

Why you get quotation with big difference on makeup brushes

Many customers may have such experience: they have purchased makeup brushes from a certain makeup brush supplier for long time, one day, on impulse, they find another supplier and then send emails for inquiry, the result is they are shocked by the significant difference on the quotation and become puzzled: what is wrong? Why so big difference? Do I suffer great loss on previous purchasing?

In fact, it is really normal, the price varies a lot due to different material and dimension. So, while enquiring, you should clearly explain your material, dimension and all other requirements on the makeup brushes.

If you have described the totally same requirements to different suppliers and still get quotation with big difference, that maybe because of your supply source.

1.       If your suppliers are from the same location, the price difference maybe because they are not the makeup brush factory or manufacturer but the distributor. That is you do not get the factory direct price. For example, the EXW price of makeup brush is $1.0, the first distributor will quote at least $1.2 (some even quote $2.0), the second distributor may quote $1.5, and so forth. Then the quotation to the end customers may reach $3.0 which is three times of the original EXW price.

2.       If your suppliers are from difference country, that is easier to understand, just think about that buy a makeup brush from a Chinese makeup brush factory may just need $1.0, but if you buy form an European makeup brush manufacturer or factory, the factory price may reach $20.0

3.       If your suppliers are the Chinese factory and European distributor, the price difference will be much bigger, we usually get known that we offer makeup brushes to our overseas customers at $1.0, and their selling price is $100.0. The shocking difference, right? But it is really the truth.

That is why so many customers prefer to custom makeup brushes directly from Chinese manufacturers, they can get much more profit from such sourcing with the same quality,

Be careful of the mixed hairs of makeup brushes

Everyone knows that for makeup brushes, the most important is bristles. As it is the part which directly touches our skin, the bristle quality will affect the touch feeling.

 

Therefore, most customers will require high quality bristles during their custom makeup brushes, and at the same time, they also would like to get the lowest price. It is understandable. While be careful of the low price trap. As many bad makeup brush suppliers will mix low-grade hairs into the high-grade hairs during manufacturing and sell them as the high-grade brushes but with much lower price. But it is really not cost-effective to buy such makeup brushes at such price.

 

It is said that what you pay what you get. In fact, within the same area, the labor cost of the makeup brushes is almost the same, no big difference, so the price difference must on the raw material. At this time, customers can send inquiry to several makeup brush factory in the same location like Zhejiang or Shenzhen, and clearly express that you need pure high-grade bristles with no mixture. Then you can check their quotation. The price should have no big difference, if have, that must because of the material. Customers should be careful of the lowest price, do not always prefer the makeup brush manufactures with the lowest price.

 

Of course, it really exists that some makeup brush suppliers can indeed offer good makeup brushes with lowest price. If customers really want to buy brushes from such suppliers, you must ask for samples before order large quantity and clearly indicate in the agreement that no mixed bristles are permitted.

About the lip brush quality

If you order some makeup brush sets from a makeup brush manufacturer, and have not enough time to check every brush’s quality after receiving. We suggest you check the lip brush at first.

That is because lip brush is easies to have quality problem. If there are powder brushes, blush brushes, foundation brushes, eye brushes, lip brushes etc in the makeup brush set, all other brushes have the same inspection standard, that is : no lose bristles, no marks on ferrule and handle, the handle and ferrule should be smooth and straight etc. It is easy to check the quality, and will cost less time.

While for lip brushes, it is different, besides the above quality concerns, you should pay attention to the following possible problems:

1.       If the bristle top is tipped, according to the working instruction of lip brushes, each lip brush bristle should be tipped, if not, the lip brush is not qualified;

2.       If the bristle is covered with a tube;

3.       If any bristles is backward by the tube. As each lip brush should have a tube cover on the bristles, it requires a lot on the techniques and is easy to have backward bristles, while backward bristles is not qualified.

Of course, besides the above aspects, you should also check the lip brush ferrule and handle etc.

While custom makeup brushes from the brush factory, you should clearly express your quality requirements on the makeup brushes in your purchase order or agreement and ensure that your makeup brush suppliers have completely understand your requirements, so that you can get the exact brushes you need and will avoid of possible conflicts.

About the sample fees

Although we have explained a lot on why we charge sample fees for makeup brushes, some customers still can not understand such regulation, they even think it is just our excuse, and doubt our sincerity to do business with them.

 

For some customers, the makeup brush factory should offer free samples for their evaluation at the very beginning, and only after their confirmation of the makeup brush quality, they can consider the next step. For them, the makeup brush manufacturers should seize all possible opportunities to establish cooperation with them even lose some money at the very beginning.

 

Yes, we really want to establish cooperation with each potential customer, and we always consider customers as king, but we are a company and need profits to survive, so we can not always meet the requirements of every customer who asks for free samples. And in our opinion, the establishment of cooperation needs the efforts of both sides. We, as the makeup brush supplier, will not make any profit on the sample. On the other hand, we hope that at the very beginning, the customers can afford such sample fee which will be refunded to customers in the future orders. We think it is really fair and would like to get support and understanding from all of our customers. After establishing long term cooperation, it is ok to offer free samples sometimes as long as we have existing materials in hand. We will not charge any fee for these samples.

 

Of course, most customers can totally understand us and agree to pay the sample fees. Once they would like to custom makeup brushes from us, they will ask us to make prototypes and pay them, after confirming the brush quality, they will place orders sooner or later and we will refund the sample fees to them as promised. We have established long term relationship with many customers by this way, and we both are happy with our cooperation.

Some points for attention during initial communication with makeup brush customers

During the initial communication with the customers, you should clearly understand customer requirements and ensure that customers have understood your real meaning too.

Generally, in makeup brush business, there are two kinds of customers: those want to custom makeup brushes and those prefer wholesale makeup brushes of your existing types. You should communicate with them in different ways.

For the customers to custom makeup brushes, the salesman in makeup brush factory should get information on customer requirements as detailed as you can, you should at least know the following information:

1.       The bristle, ferrule and handle material.

2.       The color of bristle, ferrule and handle. Although color will not affect the makeup brush price, color confirmation is the most difficult during initial communication, as even if with the same description like deep red, it has different level for deep red. It will be best if customers can send a brush sample with such color to the makeup brush manufacturer, if not, pantone code is the most common way to confirm colors.

3.       The ferrule diameter: it includes the two end diameters, the diameter connected to the bristle will decide the bristles quantity, and the end connected to the handle will decide the handle size; this will greatly affect the whole makeup brush price.

4.       The length of each part, the reason is the same as item 3, size decides the material usage.
